Day 21: songs with a name in their title

Cade’s first song pick…

Funny that only two nights ago I was watching a reaction video where the dude was listening to the entire album Treasure by Cocteau Twins. Lotta songs on that album with “a person’s name” in the title. Loads of great music on that album too. But upon my first listening to the album many years ago, there was one in particular that really grabbed me.

^Cocteau Twins – Lorelei -^

Roob’s first song pick…

For this post, I’m gonna pick the three songs with my closest female relatives’ names in their titles, and I shall start with my Nanny Packer. This was her song…

^Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen (Original Promo Restored) (With Lyrics) (1982) (HD)^

Cade’s second song pick…

Got another song in mind, also has a girl’s name in the title, but gonna take a quick detour before getting to that one.

And yes, I realize that “Sue” is also a girl’s name, but, that’s kinda the point of the song. I wore trenches in the 45 listening to this one over and over when I was a kid. The part about fighting always fascinated me. Especially the part where his dad comes at him with a knife and “cut off a piece of my ear”.

WTF?!?!?!??

I guess I related to the song because relations between myself and my own father were always…strained. Makes sense I guess because he and his own father were always at it like a coupla rabid badgers. Maybe it’s genetic.

^Johnny Cash – A Boy Named Sue (Live At San Quentin Jail 1969)^

Roob’s second song pick…

My second song choice is for my Mother and unlike when Nanny P passed away, we did have mum’s song played at her funeral. There was not a dry eye in the place…

^The Beatles – Hey Jude^

Cade’s third song pick…

OK, last one, another girl name. This too popped up recently for me when stumbling across a video where a really smart and sharp dude breaks down songs and shows how they are assembled. He’s got some expensive tools for breaking down the original audio into its various parts, he’s very technical about how he breaks it down, but at the same time he puts a lot of stuff in layman’s terms by showing how the bits of music are assembled. Not to mention that he’s obviously a huge music fan. He’s got one for this next song too if you care to indulge yourself. Blah blah blah …digress.

I really liked this song, but grew up in a time period and geographical location to where admitting as much could get you killed. Wimpy music that only wussies and fags* listen to. Kinda funny considering the musical prowess of the members of Toto. But, all just part of growing up when and where I did.

/me shrugs

*Fags (pejorative, slang, US): queers, homos, butt-pirates, gay rods, poofs, homosexuals.

^Toto – Rosanna (Official Music Video)^

Roob’s third song pick…

My last choice is for my sister. To be honest, I was only really familiar with the chorus before today, but mum and dad sang it to her a lot when she was a babe…

^Bobby Sherman – Julie, Do Ya Love Me (1970)^

The final word to Cade…

Gotta give this song a mention, because were it not for this song, I likely would never have met a lot of people that I have met over the past coupla years, and you would not be reading this now. Heard it on one of the first “sync videos” that I ever saw, it was used as background music, and it grabbed me from the get go. I fucking HAD to find this song. I fucking HAD to know who made it. Was kinda funny when I found out that the person who wrote it had actually appeared on my radar before. Coincidence? Possibly. But have you ever had a really long string of words appear randomly in your head? A very succinct something built by two very distinct somethings from your past?

Film: A Thin Skin Or Membrane, God Does Not Play Dice

Yep, that whole thing appeared in my head one day I guess about eight years or so ago now. Sitting alone in the garage, not doing anything, BLAM!!! there it was. Blew my mind because it brought a lot of childhood memories flooding back. Things long forgotten. Especially the mechanics of membranes, how they work, why they exist, etc.. As such, I found myself quite perplexed, was completely cut off and isolated at the time, so I immediately went to Google, searched for the whole string, and “synchromysticism” is what I found. In particular, two videos by someone called “Sealion”…one was a four parter called “Film: A Thin Skin Or Membrane”, and the other a single video called “God Does Not Play Dice”. Quite overwhelming considering my situation at the time. The videos made sense, but at the same time I didn’t understand them. Why me? Why now? Why so succinct and to the point, and yet so vague? Guess I’ll just tighten my seatbelt, and see where it all leads.

I’ve since learned that “sealion” is a slang for a form of harassment where one intrudes on conversations with disingenuous questions. “Sealioning” is I guess throwing up a wall of questions when not actually seeking answers. A method for stealing time. Time-thieves. Right up my alley. Maybe I’m in the right place afterall. Maybe not. No idea.

^POGO – Alice (Official Video)^

*There you are, Clicky… /pat snout… I wondered where you got to…*

We’re nearly into the final straight, Dear Reader, so here is a quick recap of where we’ve been and where we’re headed…

30-Day Song Challenge: Meanings!

LAST TIME

*Good thinking, Clicky. Buggered if I can remember where we got to…*

Apols! for the two day break in this 30 Day Song Challenge, Dear Reader. I did manage to drag my snot-riddled carcass into work at the Tower on Monday morning, but was promptly sent home…

*The chorus is applicable, Clicky, but the song has a different meaning…*

… But, now I’m on the mend and feeling at least half human again, we can finally get on with the post. No suggestion from Poppy Sweet Pea this time, I’m afraid, but Leggy is provided an absolute corker of a song with many meanings…

^The Damned – Curtain call – The Best Version Sound & Video^

… So, let’s crack on, Dear Reader. Enjoy! 😀

Day 20: songs that have many meanings

Cade’s first song pick…

9b3b4771e603b05a763690d589374ab2-ap-psychology-personal-statements
This is potentially an interesting topic with a lot of latitude. Let’s us start off with something obvious.

^If You See Kay _ APRIL WINE^

Roob’s first song pick…

Considering the unexpected war-like start to the new year…

kate spade black swan bag

*/lights up… Yeah, the US bagging the Iranian General in Iraq… /drags…  was a bit black swanish, Clicky… /streams smoke…*

… my first pick is a song about a symbol that has different meanings…

*That’s fantastic… /smokes… Whipple the gliding ace should be the name of a swan…*

… To me, it will always mean ‘The Young Ones’ 😀

^MOTÖRHEAD – Ace of Spades on “The Young Ones”^

Cade’s second song pick…

funny-pics-in-soviet-russia-calm-keeps-you
This one qualifies in a less “tongue-in-cheek” kind of way. I’ve thought of using this song several times during the course of this writing. Anyway, I’ve written about this song in previous writings + the album the song appeared on + the album cover = a young mind wandering to some distant and strange places. I honestly have no idea the scope of the places my mind went went I was 7/8 years old, laying on the floor, and listening to this song through headphones while staring at the album cover.

I get the feeling that you don’t always need drugs to “trip“, and the album ‘A Question Of Balance‘ by The Moody Blues is quite possibly one of the strangest ways to get mind, body, spirit and soul to places far afield. The music is…well, it ain’t really Rock-N-Roll…let’s just put it that way. I wouldn’t consider it Progressive either. At the same time, it’s too heavy for me to consider it either Classical or Folk. It’s like some Frankensteined experimental blending of a lot of different musical styles and elements, all joined together to tell some individual narratives in a single tale. And, it’s some pretty fucking good music.

^The Moody Blues- Question^

Roob’s second song pick…

Until 2014, I had never even heard of this next song. It was completely new to Thoughtful Man also, which was a surprise, as he’s a music buff and a collector of songs. Apparently Beatles fans are still arguing amongst themselves as to its meaning, but to me? It means…

man well know nothing

*I couldn’t have put it better myself, Clicky… /flicks ash…*

^Glass Onion (Remastered 2009)^

Cade’s third song pick…

Would anyone…choose…to go to hell? Am a bit older now, so what “hell” actually is appears to be not so clearly defined as it was when I was younger. The Greeks appear to have some thoughts on the place, as did the Scandinavians, as do a lot of cultures, so what is this place. Really. What, is, hell? Why, in the hell, would anyone want to go there?

Being textually clever and creative about your own station in life can be dangerous. It may just get you damned. Like say, a rock-n-roll singer and lyricist writing about their experiences within their chosen profession, and writing metaphorically to relate what the experience is actually like. Willingly agreeing to subject your body to all manner of abuses that the job requires. Away from home constantly. On the road, staying in bad motels/hotels, eating crappy food that constantly makes you sick, and everyone wants a piece of you. Loads of investors throwing money at you to do your thing, but they get their money back first, and you get what’s leftover. As this job eats away at you, a black vortex forms on the horizon, it’s pulling you in, and there’s no escaping the inevitable.

This job ...is going... to kill you

It’s almost like, oh…I dunno, working in some place that processes plutonium. Or maybe digging coal or diamonds or copper out of the ground. Maybe you work on and around dangerous machinery. Maybe your job is physically demanding, and you are one single injury away from complete destruction. Maybe you work behind the register in a shop where some idiot can waltz in at any moment with a weapon and take your life over a few bucks. Maybe you work in some building that is loaded with Asbestos, or has lead pipes providing you water, or the walls are covered in lead paint. Maybe you sit on your ass all day in a chair that was not designed for you, at a desk that does not accommodate you, wearing clothing of a type that is not comfortable and/or aesthetically pleasing for you, banging away on a keyboard that was not designed for you, and staring at a radiation emitting device that was not meant to be stared at for long periods of time, all day every day. Any of that might be almost like…choosing, to go, to hell.

Comes down to morals and ethics. The “honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay” kinds of bullshit. Clean money Vs dirty money. Honest money acquired by honest means.

lolz...ok, if you say so

Did you even notice that Roob has had to post this late because she’s laid up sick? I mean, whatever she has must be a doozy because she was sick most all last week and STILL had to take time off this week because the shit appears to be getting worse and worse. What do you think her employer thinks about her having to take time off from work on the tail-end of a week’s vacation? What kinds of stresses does that cause on both her and her place of employment? And why is that? Because scammers and scumbags have taken advantage of sick leave and other types of authorized absences? The employers retaliate by taking advantage of the situation and making authorized absences something that employees utilize at their own peril. Or at least, its that way here in the US. Taking a sick day may as well be volunteering to be put on each and every shit-list your employer may have.

Performance Reviews? FUCKED!
Advancement Opportunities? FUCKED!
Employee loyalty? SUSPECT!
Job dedication? SUSPECT!
Office gossip and rumor? OPEN FOR BUSINESS!
Crap jobs, shit detail(s) and dead-end or impossible projects? THEY’RE ALL YOURS!
Working environment/workplace morale? WE’RE ON THE HIGHWAY TO HELL BABY!

There’s always loads of layers to a single something. Lots of angles, lots of interests, lots of players playing in a shitload of games. Guess it just depends on how deep we as individuals are prepared to dive.

^Rush-The Trees (Lyrics)^

Roob’s third song pick…

*”The future of the future, is the present, and this is something people are terrified of”… /stubs butt… What’s he mean by that, Clicky, and what the fuck does it have to do with my third song?*

*The Royal Oak! …/pats snout… Fuck knows how I managed to get in there each week, Clicky – I looked 12!*

The final word to Cade…

241daaaef27954748118907eaf8f4a1d
Was cruising YouTube last night, and stumbled across a debate from 1979 where John Cleese and Sarah Palin‘s dad were debating with Bishop of Southwark Mervyn Stockwood and “noted Christian” Malcolm Muggeridge on some show called “Friday Night, Saturday Morning“. In truth, I don’t know if Michael Palin is actually Sarah Palin‘s father, but I guess it’s possible. Anyway, these four and the host were “debating” the movie Monty Python’s Life Of Brian. Here are the four parts to the debate if you wanna viddy for yourself.

All I could think about whilst watching this “debate” was the metaphorical nature of the movie (which I have only recently seen myself for the first time) and also the metaphorical nature of the tales that Jesus wove. Just seems like Jesus/Yeshua or whatever his name was, spent a lot of time trying to get those around them to think. Yes, also to feel, but you don’t spin these metaphorical parables without a desire to get your listeners to think. Inspire them to explore. To relate. And yes, to question. Maybe we sometimes get “the act of questioning” wrong because our ideas on what is/is not respectful become skewed and warped by the safety of the known. The knowledgeable, the wise and the learned “know”, so why discover anything for myself? Just go to the experts, problem solved. Someone tells you “this is the right way, and the only way, so says God” and you are likely going to believe them. I mean…God is on their side, right? Who in their right mind is going to contest God or anyone on God’s side? That must be the right way to go…right?

Day 19: songs that make you think about life

Cade’s first song pick…

If you’re one of the few that has endured the challenges of reading my writing, you’ll know that one of the topics that I explore quite frequently is the act of speaking with God and/or the gods/goddesses. Its something that I think about often, but I have always gotten the impression that others don’t think about it much. And in this context I mean “speaking with”…not some inquisitional, interrogative or confrontational something. Speaking with, as in, talking to them as you would anyone else. I get the feeling that most would think this a disrespectful mode of communication for a human to engage with the Almighty(s), and perhaps even irreverent, profane, sacrilegious, or blasphemous. I find this strange considering it appears to be A-OK to pray to God and ask for forgiveness for your embezzling money for the company you work for, ask for forgiveness for fucking half of the women in your congregation, or maybe even pray to ask God to kill one of your enemies.

First heard this song only recently, and it got me to again thinking about the confrontational nature of most earthly communications directed towards the heavenly realms and the ethereal residents who occupy these otherly places. We want our independence…until the shit hits the fan anyway. It is at this point in which we request an intervention from those with the power. No one wants God nor gods/goddesses as their next door neighbor or even as a friend. Too risky. Too potentially demanding. Too much faith required. You never know when they may need a favor from you. Next thing you know, you’re in the belly of a whale, or your gf is turning into a pillar of salt, or you’re leading millions on a wandering mission to nowhere, or your deity neighbor has decided to go on a walkabout and wants you to drop everything, give up all your possessions, and aimlessly follow them around for a few years.

Needless to say, I’m a tad skeptical when someone tells me that my asking God “Sup y0! How’s things? Did you see that sky last night?” is a disrespectful act on my part.

^Highasakite – Golden Ticket [Lyrics]^

Roob’s first song pick…

*/Honks doze loudly…*

^Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World^

Cade’s second song pick…

This song doesn’t have a single word. Yeah, there’s some vocals, but I have no idea what they are saying, or if they are even saying anything. ‘Tis a great tune that kinda leads you away to some mystical somewhere of everything and nothing. Lets you think about life. And if you watch the video of course, it’s loaded with life. Lots to think about.

^Orbital – Halcyon On and On^

Roob’s second song pick…

*/Rattlin’ breath…*

^POGO – Wizard of Meh (Official Video)^

Cade’s third song pick…

The choice is quite simple here…A) Heaven, or B) Las Vegas.

Select your destination

Choice “A” is steeped in neither choice nor chance, and “B” is steeped in both choice and chance. A provides freedom from choice, B provides freedom to choose. A = security, B = freedom. And don’t ask me what the lyrics are because I don’t know. I only know that this song has been a staple in my musical catalogue for a very long time, and every single time she says “But is it Heaven or Las Vegas?”…I get chills…

every time

Later in the song, she says “Must be why I’m thinking of Las Vegas”, and again, chills. What in the hell is she singing about? Truth is, I don’t want to know. The song title and the theme is enough for me, and it gives me all kinds of freedom to let my mind wander and wonder what in the hell she’s singing about. What in life, could possibly inspire someone to write a song about an inability to determine if you were in Heaven or Las Vegas? OH! And speaking of Las Vegas, I watched a video the other day on the 10 most corrupt cities in the USA. Guess what? Las Vegas was indeed in the top 10, but it was not #1. That distinction fell to…

Washington D.C.

Makes me wonder why so many scramble to get to DC. Why would people climb over each other to get to the biggest cesspool in the nation? Surely not a desire to clean things up. Every wealthy and powerful motherfucker that lives there has maids, butlers and nannies, so it can’t be a desire to clean.

^Cocteau Twins- Heaven or Las Vegas WS 2013^

Roob’s third song pick…

*/Sucks on throat lozenge…*

^Frank Sinatra – That’s Life^

The final word to Roob Clicky….

*Don’t you mean ‘Beat It’, Kicky?*

*Haha… /coughs… Don’t make me laugh, Kicky…*

Day 18: Songs from the year you were born

Cade’s first song pick…

Hey…Roob…could you be a shade more…vague? Three songs each from 1967? Am I to deduce that we are supposed to be thinking of songs from the year we were hatched? Or…conceived. Cause like…your parents musta been getting freaky in 1966 cause you were born in May of 1967. Me? I’m straight up 1967, cause I was born in November of 1967. Irrespective of the specifics, it’s not like I was listening to the radio as soon as I was born. So…what in the FUCK does music from 1967 mean to me?

I wonder what was going on, 15 November 1967. Anything interesting? I was already aware that MJ Adams died on that day piloting an X-15 aircraft, but anything else interesting going on? Especially in no-fucking-where Oklahoma where some tubby 9 pound 11 ounce kid was born in the wee hours of the morning?

1 + 9 + 6 + 7 = 23

2 + 3 = 5

One…five

Hrm
^Happy Together – Turtles^

Roob’s first song pick…

*Ah,  the anthem of ‘The Summer of Love’, Clicky… /blows smoke rings… Incidentally, I Haight ASH and would love to see them buried… /flicks ash…*

On the 25th May 1967, Procol Harum’s ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ entered the UK charts for the first time. It didn’t get to No.1 until it dislodged the song that was topping the charts on the day of my birth…

*And what was No.1 on Cade’s birthday, Clicky?*

^Baby Now That I’ve Found You – The Foundations -1967^

Cade’s second song pick…

Turtles, eh? Kinda weird considering that I have two “power animals”…the donkey, and the turtle. That’s some fucked up power animals for someone to have, eh? Yeah, the scorpion is also a power animal of mine, but that goes without saying because I was born in November. Which, speaking of, did you know that Scorpio is a water sign?

Me neither

Just got an urge to look up songs from 1967 that dealt with “water”, and holy smokes…one caught my eye. Mainly because I wrote a song once where the lyrics were…

Another silly question…from the mouth of babes…you point me to…
One more empty portal…on a sinking ship…not much to do…
Pull my chain…and drag me…but don’t call my name.

Wrote another song where the lyrics were…

Left hand…right hand…whadda ya gonna do…
Got an empty soul…like a hole in my shoe.

Do you think maybe that “resonance” is a thing? Portal(s)? Water(s)? Syncing(s)? As far as I know, I’ve never heard this song in my life. Not until now anyway.

^HOLE IN MY SHOE (1967) by Traffic (incredible stereo mix)^

Roob’s second song pick…

Hey Cade… ‘Hole In My Shoe’ got to No.2 of the UK charts in 1967 and again in the eighties with Neil from the ‘Young Ones’…

*If I’d been born a boy, I’d have been called Neil… /sigh…1984. Again. I swear, I’m being stalked by that year, Clicky… /thinks… I wonder if it’s ‘cos I lost my virginity during the first couple of hours of 1984. I was drunk…*

^The Supremes – The Happening^

Cade’s third song pick…

OK…um…hrm. Just blasted through the top 30 songs of 1967, and a few of them tickled my fancy. The Monkees ‘I’m A Believer‘ charted in 1967, and it grabbed me because I almost used ‘Last Train To Clarksville‘ and ‘Hey Hey We’re The Monkees‘ in the previous post. ‘Soul Man‘ by Sam & Dave also grabbed me, but primarily because of The Blues Brothers. Aretha Franklin’s “Respect‘ appears to have charted in 1967, and she had an appearance in the Blues Brothers movie singing ‘Think‘. ‘Incense And Peppermints‘ by Strawberry Alarm Clock also rang some bells, and ‘Windy‘ by The Association was another song I was quite familiar with.

All that said, this one actually means a special something to me because I listened to it on vinyl a lot as a kid. Completely perplexing song for a young mind. I didn’t “get it”. Could not understand it. Why, in the hell, would someone …EVER… jump off a bridge?

^Bobbie Gentry, 1967: Ode to Billie Joe – Original Capitol 45 rpm Disc^

Roob’s third song pick…

*Agreed, Clicky. These Song Challenge posts are a bit missive-ish… /stubs butt…*

The final word from Cade…

After I finished writing last night, it occurred to me that it had gone past midnight, and was now January 4th. The significance? My daughter was born on this day in 2000. My daughter turns 20 in 2020. Weird.

Digress

Considering the subject matter, loads of memories came flooding back. Music and movies of the time, things that were going on in the world, things that were going on in my own life, they were some strange times. The new millennium, the arguments over when the new millennium actually started, the Internet was moving into the mainstream, the Y2K Bug didn’t kill us all 4 days ago, the “DOT COM” bubble, the mortgage refinance boom was flagging, not to mention that 9/11, Freedom Fries, The Patriot Act, Homeland Security, and a shitload of war was right around the corner…although we didn’t know it yet. Or did we?

Did some digging for songs that were released on 4 January of 2000, and stumbled across an interesting footnote type of thing from that date…an album released called ‘Before The Buildings Fell‘ by Black Tape For A Blue Girl. It appears that the album was originally released in 1986, but was re-released on “enhanced CD” in 2000. Anyone remember “enhanced CDs“? Another weird curiosity from the time. And speaking of curiosities, it looks like someone uploaded the whole CD to YouTube about a month ago. Good timing, eh?

Day 17: songs you’d sing as a duet with somebody at karaoke

Cade’s first song pick…

If we are gonna sing a duet, you carry yo key, and I’ll carry mine. K? I mean, what would you do if I sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me? Welp, lend me your beers and I’ll sing a song with you. I will try not to sing out of…

Keystone brand beer, manufactured by the Coors Brewing Company, Golden Colorado

Had to slide a commercial in there to get the advertising revenues up.

^The Clash – Should I Stay or Should I Go (Official Audio)^

Roob’s first song pick…

Assuming my karaoke duet partner is a bloke, there’ll be no messing about: I’ll sing Jennifer Warnes and he can sing Bill Medley…

*Yeah, or Joe Cocker. I’m not fussed, Clicky, both are great…*

^Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes – (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life^

Cade’s second song pick…

This one really should have been included in the “classics”. I mean, seems like I read somewhere that this song has been played on the radio more than any other song in history. Someone sure seems to like it. That means everyone at a karaoke type event would love to hear it butchered by someone…so…how ’bout you and me give it a whirl!!! We can take turn on the verses, and back each other up when the other is singing. Should be a blast.

^The Romantics – What I Like About You (Video)^

Roob’s second song pick…

Now, should my Karaoke duet partner be a woman, then I definitely think we could give Summers and Streisand a run for their money…

keep dreamin

*Oi! Well, I’ll tell you what then, Clicky, you pick your perfect karaoke duet song for my third song choice. Okay?*

^Donna Summer Barbra Streisand No More tears enough is enough Lyrics^

Cade’s third song pick…

Been bopping through a few Beatles tunes to see which one might make a good duet, but it slowly became painfully aware that the truth of the matter is that I have no gf, nor do I have many friends, and the friends I do have are pretty goddamn far away. So me figuring out a song to sing with someone is a tall order. Maybe ‘Don’t You Want Me‘ by Human League? ‘Puff The Magic Dragon‘ by Peter, Paul & Mary? ‘I’m Gonna Be‘ by The Proclaimers? ‘More Than This‘ by Roxy Music? ‘Cosmic Thing‘ or ‘Bushfire‘ or “Private Idaho‘ by The B-52’s? ‘It’s Only Love‘ by Bryan Adams and Tina Turner? Who is this person I’m putting vocal demands upon? Can she belt it out like Tina Turner? Is she a soprano? Tenor? Baritone? Mezzo-soprano? Erm…Bass?

^Nobody Knows^

Fuck it…if I’m trying to figure out how to make a duet work, I may as well go ahead and convolute the whole mess further by selecting a trio tune that has very little actual singing and plenty of impossible dancing.

^1080p HD “Good Morning” – Singin’ in the Rain (1952)^

Roob’s third song pick…

*So come on, what’s is it, Clicky?*

*Hahahah… Wait, seriously?*

The final word to Cade…

Poor Roob is illin’ so I prolly shouldn’t be running all long-winded like this. However, it’s already too late. The die is cast. My backspace button on my keyboard is inoperative, and there’s no going back. I’ve gone way the fuck overboard, and guess I should just keep on rambling.

We prolly aren’t treating this like an audition on Britain’s Got Talent or American Idol, so we can prolly just focus on having fun and just letting the moment develop however it does. But it’s prolly important that my singing partner be at least somewhat familiar with the song. Prolly should even be a something they like. Dunno if this would be in their repertoire, but it never hurts to ask.

Day 16: songs that are classic favourites

Cade’s first song pick…

Classics, eh? I guess that means Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Beatles, Lynard Skynard, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones…popular stuff. Stuff that pretty much everyone likes. That’s what makes a classic, a classic. Popular.

^ZZ Top – Pearl Necklace^

Roob’s first song pick…

What Cade said… And Elvis…

^Junkie XL, Elvis Presley – A Little Less Conversation (Elvis vs JXL)^

Cade’s second song pick…

Saw some video this morning from that White Island eruption that occurred a few weeks ago. The news personality was blabbing non-stop so I have no idea what was really going on in the video. Other than the obvious, I wonder if they are gonna ban people from visiting the island.

^Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel – Lust For Death^

Roob’s second song pick…

*Dow datsa sneeze, Kicky… /wipes doze…*

^Billy Joel”We Didn’t Start The Fire”w/History Videos(BEST ON YOUTUBE)^

Cade’s third song pick…

I’ve already included shitloads of music that I personally would consider “classic”. Staples. Musical signposts on the audible highway(s). Some roads are more traveled than others, and I personally pretty much listen to the same bullshit as everyone else. For the most part. A few musical oddities here and there.

^THE CRYSTAL METHOD – BUSY CHILD^

Roob’s third song pick…

My last classic song reminds me of my sister. Thirty years ago, Thoughtful Man and I had karaoke at the evening reception of our wedding. Juju sang this to us and everybody else. I have never laughed so hard in all my days…

*If you can fined da disc wid our wedding video on it, Kicky, I’ll put it up on YouToob…*

The final word from Roob Clicky…

^Jackie Wilson – Reet petite^

Speaking of karaoke, Dear Reader, the challenge tomorrow is for ‘songs you’d sing a duet with someone on karaoke’. Not that I am in any fit state to sing right now…

*Uncannily accurate, Kicky…*

Day 13: Songs from the ’70s

Cade’s first song pick…

Lots going on with music in the 1970’s. Was a weird time. Everything not yet commercialized in music was busy being commercialized, and there was no shortage of music to be had. All sorts of music from anywhere and everywhere. I wonder if the popularization of “the salad bar” has anything to do with the propagation of music. Well, maybe that in conjunction with the availability of devices to play music just about anywhere and everywhere. Oh, and the mass production of music made available via multiple mediums as well as the creation of large chains of music stores. It was quite amazing as a kid to walk into a record store and see row after row of albums on the shelves. Who are all these people? Where is all this music coming from?

I’m bouncing around in time a bit between the starry-eyed kid that I was then, and the hopefully somewhat more knowledgeable person I am now. And yeah, it was a mystical time to me back then. Not only was everything new, everything seemed…surreal. Dreamy. I dunno how else to qualify it. Everything around me was real, and it was happening, but everything was so odd and bizarre that it seemed to strain the imagination. Completely and totally unreal. Fuzzy.

^Time^

Roob’s first song pick…

I didn’t really like Marc Bolan of T. Rex when I was growing up in the 70s. I think it was because of the iron-on transfer of his face mum put on my tee shirt. My little sis got a Jimmy Osman ironed on to hers and I really wanted his brother Donny emblazoned across my chest. I got Marc Bolan instead; the shop had sold out of iron-on Donnies.

Childhood trauma caused by not getting what you want aside, I grew up and came to appreciate the late Marc Bolan, and T. Rex’s ‘Get It On’ is bang on for the ’70s.

*/puffs contentedly… That’s 1971, Clicky…*

Cade’s second song pick…

Ever stop and wonder what the point of music is? What its purpose is? I just did, and pretty sure it was the first time in my life that I’ve ever done so. Man…what a mind-bender. What, is the point, of music? I got nothin’. Maybe its just something we do.

/shrug

Music is a language, sure. A medium for transmitting information. A method of “getting through” or otherwise expressing a something or communicating in a certain way when all other means and modes fail us. But sometimes it doesn’t work well in any of those capacities. May as well be a fucking force-field. A wall. An electrified barbed-wire fence. A landmine, a bazooka, a sword or some other kind of weapon. A bottomless pit of full of nothing, leading absolutely nowhere.

^John Williams:”Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977)-Main Theme^

Yeah, I figure that if you’re gonna address 1970’s music, and you actually lived through that period? You gotta address “movie music”. And if you’re gonna address “movie music” of the 1970’s, that means John Williams.

^John Williams: Theme from Jaws (Boston Pops)^

John Williams was by no means the only composer of the period, and there are actually a lot of great composers from the period. But again, if you lived in this period of time, I’ve given you three pieces of music that are likely to resonate in your head to this very day. Oh wait, I’ve only given you two so far. Lemme see if YouTube and Lucasfilm LTD. and/or The Walt Disney Corporation will allow me to provide you with the third.

^John Williams – Star Wars Main Theme स्टार वॉर्स スター・ウォーズシリーズ Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa^

hans solo smile

*Woo Hoo! 1977…/hand fin slap… Don’t get cocky, kid…*

Roob’s second song pick…

In 1972, Apollo 17 was the last manned Moon flight. Ironically, as the Apollo Space Program was winding down, songs about rockets and space travel could not be hotter, with Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’…

^Elton John – Rocket Man (1972)^

…and the re-release of ‘Space Oddity’, propelling David Bowie to his first No. 1…

*And that’s 72… /final drag…*

Cade’s third song pick…

As per usual, I’m gonna go over quota, but this was truly a strange time for music. Pop was mainstream. Disco was mainstream. Soul was mainstream. R&B was mainstream. Funk was mainstream. Rap was mainstream. Country was mainstream. Classical was mainstream. Folk was mainstream. Broadway musicals music was mainstream. Easy-Listening was mainstream. Progressive was mainstream. New Wave was mainstream. Punk was mainstream. Rock was mainstream. Soft Rock was mainstream. Pop Hard Rock was mainstream. Hard Rock was mainstream. Heavy Metal was mainstream. Hell, even Christian Contemporary music…was mainstream. Anything and everything was mainstream. Anything and everything was…Pop Music.

^M – Pop Muzik (Official Video)^

Roob’s third pick…

As it appears Cade has gone all in on his last turn, here’s what I’m holding for my final lay down… a pair of queens. One Killer…

^Queen – Killer Queen (Top Of The Pops, 1974)^

… One Dancing…

*/stubs butt… That’s 74 and 76 finished… /pats snout… Thanks, Clicky…*

The final word to Cade…

Yeah, weird times the ’70s. Strange days. The 1970’s were confused. Violent. Lots of shifts. Many adjustments being made, lots of people going hither and yon, and I can’t help but wonder if maybe all of this music being spewed everywhere and from all directions, maybe helped to keep a lid on some of the bubbling cauldrons. Music and it’s tendrils weaving in and out of the fabric of societies here and there, somehow kept the whole goddamn house from burning down.

That period produced quite the body-count for sure, and to get to the point, this song is I guess forever etched in my memory as the quintessential 1970’s song for me personally. My uncle requested it be played at his funeral. That’s what I was told at the time anyway. I just remember some lady gasping and saying “OH NO!” during the funeral service when it was announced that they were gonna play this song at my uncle’s request. Was dead quiet in that packed chapel. The doors to the chapel were open because so many people had showed up for the service that the chapel couldn’t accommodate them all. Yet even with all those people, and with the every door in the place swung wide open, you coulda heard a pin drop in that place. In the midst of it all, my 10 year old ears hear…

"OH NO!"

…after someone announces they’re gonna play this song. What did she mean I wonder? That was only 42 years ago. You’d think I’d have figured out what she meant by now.

^이글스 (Eagles) – Desperado^

Welcome to Day 12 of the LoL’s Song Challenge, Dear Reader. No doubt the original creator of this challenge put the task of naming a song from one’s preteens at day 12 of this endeavour on porpoise, being as 13 is the age one become’s a teenager…

Not suggesting that someone is reading my and Roob’s picks and shouting “AH HA!” at seeing a particular something being picked by one of us, but, they may be. You never know who is watching, nor why. Heh…heh…heh! Wait, where was I? Oh yeah, roller skating.

Um, I didn’t understand this song at all when I first heard it. I only know that it completely blew my socks off when I first heard it. How in the hell they were doing that…thing? With the voice? How are they doing that? I can do a slow and jazzy, weaving two-step to it while roller skating. Holy hell this song is the most funky song I’ve ever heard! Who in the hell is this ‘David Bowie’ person anyway?

^Fame (2016 Remaster)^

Roob’s first song pick…

Sunday mornings, when we lived high above Electric Avenue in Brixton, London, mum would let me and my sister play our records on her Hi-Fi and dance about the front room, while she made Sunday lunch. This was a fav…

^Carl Douglas Kung Fu Fighting (Original Music Video)^

Cade’s second song pick…

Preteens. I’d be remiss not to include something from “my other life”. I was already a dumpy, dorky, nerdy, sickly, ugly-assed and accident-prone kid. Why God WHY?!?!?? Why did I also have to be…a Christian?!?!?!? Go to church?!?!!? I’m already hated enough without all that additional trauma. Le sigh.

Worse yet…God…you gave me…a singing voice?!?!?!? A girl’s range in a boy’s body?!?!? That’s all I got as a gift upon being spun off into this world??????

NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

What in the hell is wrong with you…God??????

^Holy, Holy, Holy^

Speaking of church and religion and oppression and similar stuff, all the cool kids liked the band Kiss. To be honest, I never really “got it” with respect to their music. ‘Detroit Rock City‘ was indeed a rockin’ tune, and ‘Beth‘ I also liked, but other than that, I hadn’t heard anything from them that I liked that much. Just didn’t do anything for me, and a lot of stuff out there that I liked a helluva lot more. I never would tell the other kids that tho. All that said, I really REALLY wanted a Kiss album for Christmas just so I could say I had one, and then I’d be a cool kid too. Welp, I got an album for Christmas that year, and Kiss was on it, but it wasn’t a Kiss album. It was a compilation album put out by the record company that had one single Kiss song on it. Merry Fucking Christmas.

^Calling Dr. Love^

Roob’s second song pick…

On Sunday afternoons, we’d listen to the radio to hear a rundown of the UK’s top 40 Chart and learn what song had reached number one, and on Thursday evening’s we’d watch it on the telly on ‘Top of the Pops’. Thinking about it now, it was kinda ritual, and David Essex’s ‘Gonna Make You A Star’ is a stand out memory of that…

^David Essex • Gonna Make You A Star • TOTP 1974^

Cade’s third song pick…

If you wanna get a psychological bead on someone’s personality, I’d imagine that the music your test subject likes is as good of a metric as any to use in order to find out what makes them tick. Lotta scars in my past. Lotta bumps, bruises, breaks, and blood. Talking about them even in the most constructive of manners can still be interpreted as something bitter or hateful. Maybe even spiteful or malicious. Opening old wounds. Beating dead horses. Living in past. Not moving on. Not growing.

I got no answers. Music was just about my only escape, and even that was heavily regulated. Pretty sure I’m not angry, just telling it like it was. What in the fuck does all that have to do with anything? I dunno. Supposedly, we’re all stronger at the broken spots. Does the fact that I made it to where I am without blowing my own brains out count for anything? Or am I just a waste of space burning valuable oxygen.

/me shrugs
^Almost Famous – Tiny Dancer^

Roob’s third song pick…

In 1977 my Grandad Packer died and so the family upsticks and moved in with my Nanny P in Rotherhithe, London . We’d gone from an area that was predominantly black to one that was very white. Mainly because Rotherhithe had already lost it’s docking industry and was still derelict from the efforts of the Luftwaffe some 35 years before. ‘Parallel Lines’ was the first album I bought for myself as a preteen, and now Sunday mornings were spent in my bedroom, listening to it over and over again whilst mum and nan made Sunday lunch…

^Blondie – Sunday Girl – HD^

The final word to Cade…

Five songs when only three are required? Excessive, I know. But I’m working here. May not appear that way, but yeah, lots of work going on here.

^Fixing A Hole (Remastered 2009)^

*******

Tomorrow’s task is to collate selection of songs from the 70s, Dear Reader, so pretty much the same as today. If you have a favourite, let us know in comments and we’ll include it in the post.
