   By trying to make the poem relatable to modern audiences, Nolan lost something important, Odysseus’s relentless pursuit of glory and revenge, and his cunning as a trickster.

   Those traits don’t fit modern moral sensibilities. But they’re what make Odysseus a compelling character.
