As a North European mongrel I believe that the use of the rhotic “arse” imbues the word with so much more feeling, especially when using a well rolled “r”. And it has a long tradition. For a real laugh, read Chaucer’s “The Miller’s Tale’. And we all like well rolled rs.
In fact why did Americans not shorten the word to “rs” it they wanted to save printers ink.
Besides it makes the old Christmas story into a puerile joke.
