From memory, he was voted Speaker by the Labour party (in government at the time) in revenge for the ousting of the previous speaker, Labour stalwart Michael Martin, by Douglas Carswell, a Tory MP. Bercow was already fluttering his eyelashes across the floor of the House at the Labour government, so he was their ideal candidate to elect as they had to elect a Tory because ‘tradition’. Once he got a bit of power, he leveraged for all its worth.

      Or the short answer: ‘politics’.
