  1. Up in Northern Scotland a quine or quene is the Doric dialect word for a girl or young woman.
    A young man is a loon. No reflection on behaviour of intelligence is implied.
    Leggy may know this now that he lives among the Furry Boots * folk.
    It is interesting how Old English words and the use of them now survived in remote places like the US of A. An example that comes to mind is the use of “gotten”.

    1. Yep, the Doric is familiar to me although I still can’t follow a fast-speaker.
      There’s also a lot derived from the Vikings, like kirk for church and bairn (barn) for child.
