Thule of Rhumb

*Oh I watched that film last night, Clicky… /puts fag to lips… First time. I can see why it’s considered a cult classic…*

‘The English phrase rule of thumb refers to a principle with broad application that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation. It refers to an easily learned and easily applied procedure or standard, based on practical experience rather than theory. This usage of the phrase can be traced back to the seventeenth century.’

Good evening, Dear Reader. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there was a major meteor occurrence toward the end of July…

‘Data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory shows reported fireball events for which geographic locations are provided. Each event’s calculated total impact energy is indicated by its relative size and by color. The record shows a meteor traveling at 24.4 kilometers per second (54,000 mph) at 76.9 degrees north latitude, 69.0 degrees west longitude, on July 25 at 11:55 p.m, slammed into the atmosphere directly over Thule, Greenland.’

… And in this, our MAD whirled, the potential ramifications for such a happening, are scary as fuck…

‘According to the Military Times, the meteor “struck…miles from a key U.S. early warning air base,” which is home to the 12th Space Warning Squadron based at Thule, that operates and maintains the Air Base in support of missile warning, space surveillance, and satellite command-and-control operations missions. Thule is located 1,207 km (750 miles) north of the Arctic Circle and 1,524 km (947 miles) from the North Pole on the northwest side of the island of Greenland.’

… But in the context of the John Lamb Lash Sophia’s Correction narrative, it was Right on the gnos…

*Yeah, not only am I currently reading Lashy’s book during smoke breaks, Clicky… /drags… but on the 25th July, during the drought of ’76, a very famous image was taken… /flicks ash…*

I read about the mysterious meteor incident at around five a.m. this morning, before going to sleep. I mentioned it to my friend Cade, the Okie Devil of Text US, via DM in the Yellow universe…

Thule

‘region or island at northernmost part of the world, Old English, from Latin, from Greek Thyle “land six days’ sail north of Britain” (Strabo, quoting a lost portion of a work by Polybius, itself based on a lost account of a voyage to the north by 4c. B.C.E. geographer Pytheas). The identity of the place and the source of the name have sparked much speculation; Polybius doubted the whole thing, and since Roman times the name has been used in a transferred sense of “extreme limits of travel” (Ultima Thule).

‘The barbarians showed us where the sun set. For it happened in those places that the night was extremely short, lasting only two or three hours; and the sun sunk under the horizon, after a short interval reappeared at his rising. [Pytheas]’

‘The name was given to a trading post in Greenland in 1910, site of a U.S. air base in World War II.’

Cade was quite correct; there was a Thule Society…

‘According to Hitler biographer Ian Kershaw, the organization’s “membership list … reads like a Who’s Who of early Nazi sympathizers and leading figures in Munich”, including Rudolf Hess, Alfred Rosenberg, Hans Frank, Julius Lehmann, Gottfried Feder, Dietrich Eckart, and Karl Harrer.

‘However, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke contends that Hans Frank and Rudolf Hess had been Thule members, but other leading Nazis had only been invited to speak at Thule meetings or they were entirely unconnected with it. According to Johannes Hering, “There is no evidence that Hitler ever attended the Thule Society.”‘

Presumably they didn’t see it coming in time to issue an early warning, and so preempt the media frenzy. 😀😀😀

  2. Ya know, reading that first bit/paragraph about Heraclitus in the article you linked, and thinking about all of the people through time and times that ponder the strangeness of existence, I think you have to add some empathy to any constructs and preconceived notions we have about the eternal and the immortal. So yeah, the so-called “deities”. We are known to sometimes empathize with mere mortals, so why not an “all powerful ” being? I’ve no idea if they exist or not, and even if they do exist, I don’t know if they exist in a way that we can understand while here on this plane, but there sure as shit seems to have been a lot of talk about the lofty motherfuckers throughout time.

I sometimes have a great difficulty in communicating with others.Sometimes, I have no difficulty at all. Having difficulty is especially painful when attempting a conversation or dialogue with…
    A. Someone I like
    B. Someone I love
    C. Someone I don’t know
    D. Someone I’m likely to have an extremely short relationship with (like a teller at the convenience store or some random someone on a bus or airplane, etc..)

Difficulty in communicating with my children is one of the more painful, especially when they’ve a need or desire to know something, that want an answer relatively quickly, but I’ve no idea how to answer. Each of my children are as unique as they timing of any query, so I have to sometimes custom craft an answer based on those criteria.

Back to Heraclitus, I mean, do you really think this dude thought that someone would be reading his shit 2518 years after he wrote it? Lots to think about there with respect to what is lasting and why.
    EX A: Germany – 1000 year Reich,
EX B: China’s Emperor – Lord of Ten Thousand Years
EX C: United States of America, US Constitution, Preamble – Posterity
That last one may be a stretch to most. But in fact, there is an implication in that one single word and it’s usage/context, that The United States of America would go on forever.

Heady thinking? Welp, I would imagine that when in the process of forming a new country, you don’t form it under the auspices that the fucking thing will collapse within a week…so yeah, maybe some foreward thinking “flowery rhetoric” is sometimes called for, justified, and possibly even an absolute necessity.

You are likely wondering what chromosomes have to do with Heraclitus and whether or not his bullshit has lasted through time. Welp, as best I can tell, arcane and/or obscure shit is sometimes required to hold other more pertinent/relevant shit together. Chromosomes, and what makes them possible…for example. We may not actually see chromosomes much, but we sure as shit see the end result(s) of their efforts. We sometimes know when they seem to be OK, we sometimes know when they might potentially be not very OK at all, we know if there are too many, and we sometimes know when there aren’t enough. But what about that person themselves? Are they just and only those chromosomes?

I recently found out that I am supposedly English, Scottish, German, French, Iberian, Scandinavian and Native American. So yeah, an American mutt…no big surprise there. Or am I really just some Okie from Texas who is not in Kansas anymore. Because that might not make sense to you, but it makes perfect sense to me.
    /me shrugs, therefore I whatever

So back to hubris and ego and the like, it takes a while to understand pride and what pride means to us. Some people think and do things under the auspices of it lasting forever, but many never take the time to consider that anything and everything we do already lasts forever. We just don’t know what “forever” means because it’s still happening. Forever is now. Has been from the get-go, and will continue to be so…for…ever?
/me shrugs again, and again, and again

I’ve no idea how to pass along information and findings and experiences and all that bullshit, so, I do the best I can. I would imagine that Heraclitus was no different, and your John Lamb Lash fella is prolly no different either, nor is anyone else when faced with such a task. Cept yeah, they are different, because they are them and they do their own thing(s) their own way(s).

      1. I was actually going somewhere with that rambling bullshit above. Got sidetracked with some introspection, the genetics bit threw me, but all I could really think about while writing that was my children and the process(es) of relating to and with them.

I guess later after we started listening to that JLL talk, some stuff really resonated with me about the tools that are used for teaching, and why/when they are used and with whom.
(much like that turtle analogy with respect to flat-earth)

If a teacher specializes in elementary level teaching, that’s great…there is definitely a need for such people. But if that same teacher cannot relate in any way, shape or form to high school or university level students? Is there something wrong there? I mean, that teacher likely went to high school and later college/university, so shouldn’t they be able to relate to people that are at those education levels/ages? Or has school just become a stepping stone for some. Some inconvenience to be endured like some inopportunely placed mountain range to overcome in order to get on to bigger and better things?

Something fuzzy stuck in my craw here. Something odd. Can’t put my finger on it.

Prolly still just pining over Jen,
        /shrug
